Heat stresses electrical equipment
Fresno summers are extreme; National Weather Service records show 69 days at or above 100°F in 2021. Electrical equipment suffers in that heat. Panels on sun-baked exterior walls, wiring in attics, and the outdoor disconnect for the air conditioner all run hotter than they would in a milder climate, and heat speeds up the breakdown of insulation and loosens connections over time. If your panel cover feels hot, breakers trip on summer afternoons, or you smell something warm near the panel, call an electrician.
Air conditioning circuits
A central air conditioner needs a correctly sized circuit, breaker and disconnect. When an air conditioner is replaced, the new unit's requirements may differ from the old one's; ask the HVAC contractor and electrician to confirm the circuit matches. Corroded or burned disconnect contacts are a common cause of summer failures.
Solar and storage
Many Fresno homes have rooftop solar or are considering it. Solar systems connect to the panel, and adding them can require panel upgrades or specific breaker arrangements. Battery storage adds more. If you're considering solar, have an electrician or solar installer review your panel's capacity. If you already have solar and are adding an EV charger or heat pump, ask whether the combination still fits within the panel's limits.
EV chargers and electrification
Adding a Level 2 EV charger or switching gas appliances to electric heat pumps increases load. An electrician can do a load calculation and recommend whether you need a panel upgrade or whether load management will work. Ask your electric utility about any current rebates for electrification and panel work before you buy equipment.
Dust and outdoor equipment
Fresno County is part of the San Joaquin Valley area the EPA has classified as not meeting federal fine-particle standards. Fine dust gets into outdoor equipment, and when combined with winter moisture, it can corrode connections. Keep outdoor outlet covers closed, use weather-rated boxes and fixtures, and have outdoor equipment inspected during any electrical service visit.
Pools, spas and evaporative coolers
Pools and spas are common in Fresno, and their electrical systems have strict bonding and grounding requirements. Any pool or spa electrical work should be done by an electrician familiar with those rules. Evaporative coolers need a dedicated, correctly protected circuit; rooftop units should have a disconnect within sight.
Before you hire
Ask Fresno electricians about their experience with solar interconnection, EV charger installation and pool bonding, whether they handle utility coordination for service work, and whether permits are included. Look up the contractor's California license with the CSLB.
Older homes
Some Fresno neighborhoods have homes with original wiring, small services and two-prong outlets. When remodeling, ask whether wiring in the work area will be brought up to current code. Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms and garages benefit most from new grounded circuits with GFCI protection.
Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
Ask the electrician to check that smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are in the locations current code requires, that hardwired alarms are interconnected, and that none are past their replacement date.
