Know what the city controls
Electrical quotes in Huntsville vary with the age of the house, the panel and the job. The City of Huntsville does not set those prices, but it does set the rules for who pulls the permit and how building permits are priced. Knowing them helps you spot a quote that cuts corners.
Who pulls the permit
The City of Huntsville's permit-cost page says any plumbing, electrical, gas or mechanical work must be permitted by the contractor holding the appropriate license for that trade. For electrical work, that means the electrician, not a general handyman and not the homeowner's remodeler, applies for the electrical permit. If someone offers to do wiring and "skip the permit," treat that as a reason to look elsewhere.
How permit costs are calculated
For residential building permits other than new houses, Huntsville multiplies the total contracting price by 0.0055. If your electrical work is part of a remodel, the building permit for the remodel follows that formula. Ask whether each quote includes the permits it requires, and get the permit numbers once they are issued.
When the job is part of a bigger remodel
In Alabama, building, remodeling or repairing a residence when the job costs more than $10,000 needs a license from the Home Builders Licensure Board. On a kitchen or basement project, the remodeler may need that license, while the electrician holds an electrical license for the wiring. Ask both for their numbers and check them before signing.
Steps in a permitted job
1. Written scope: circuits, devices, fixtures and the panel work, listed. 2. Permit issued to the electrician. 3. Rough-in inspection before any wall or ceiling is closed. 4. Final inspection when the work is complete. 5. Records: keep the permit number, inspection results and invoice.
Backup power in tornado country
On April 27, 2011, 39 tornadoes touched down in the National Weather Service Huntsville office's area, and tornadoes hit Madison County six times that day. Long outages followed across north Alabama. If you are adding a generator:
- install a transfer switch or approved interlock, never a cord plugged into a dryer outlet;
- choose the circuits you need most and size the generator for their starting loads;
- place portable generators outdoors, well away from doors and windows;
- ask whether a surge protector at the panel makes sense for your house.
Comparing bids
Ask each electrician to list materials, labor, permit and any wall repair separately. Ask how long power will be off and whether the utility must disconnect service. A detailed bid is easier to compare and easier to hold someone to.
Signs to call now
Repeated breaker trips, scorched outlets, buzzing at the panel or lights that dim sharply when appliances start all deserve a prompt call. Shut off the circuit at the panel until an electrician has looked at it.
